I came on as CEO back in July of 2008. At the AGM back at the beginning of 2008, Jeanne Rossi had been elected as CEO. From what I understand, she had elected to resign. I moved to Barrie myself in 2008, and was invited to take on the role of CEO.
I cannot tell you much of what happened prior to my becoming CEO. Erich unfortunately lost his email due to a crash, and other records were lost as well, among them the CEO’s binder that was in the care of the previous CEO was never recovered, despite two registered letters being sent.
August was a busy month for the Association. It was our first yard sale, an event we hope to continue in 2009. The Executive approved a large budget for this event, as it was not only a fundraiser, but a great time to raise awareness about the party. Little did anyone realize but a month later we had the 2008 federal election.
The election was called at the beginning of September. Already the Association had been making other plans, such as a fall fundraiser, and messaging to the membership. We got quotes for new business cards for Erich, and so forth. When the election was called, due to other plans we had going on at the time, we were well prepared. We ordered signs a few days before the writ was dropped, so we had them in hand at a reasonable time. In addition, the Friday before the writ was dropped I had signed the lease for our campaign office.
I was also the Campaign Manager during the election.
The election itself was 6 weeks long, but we actively campaigned for 5 of those weeks. The first week was basically spent with Erich getting registered, getting the office set up, and so forth. We had a big campaign launch, with Green Party of Ontario leader Frank de Jong coming to Barrie. We were the only campaign kickoff to be covered by the Barrie Advance. The exact election results I will leave to Erich’s report.
Since the election we have been busy with post-election cleanup, and post-election fundraising. The campaign decided to run a deficit, and it paid off. We spent around $40,000 – $50,000. Right now the Association does carry a debt to those whom provided loans.
For 2009, I am anxiously preparing for the expansion of the Executive. We’ve had several new people join us since the end of the election. I am preparing for the formation of the Candidate Search Committee, as well as a few other committees so that we can build, and prepare for the next election which could come as soon as next week, or possibly in the spring. We are looking for members to serve on those committees.
Back in 2004 or 2005 we adopted the ravine trail in Sunnidale Park under the City’s adopt-a-park/trail program and committed to doing a cleanup each spring and fall. This past fall we missed our cleanup (for the first time, I believe) due to the election. I recommend we step up
our efforts around this program so we carry through in future even if there is an election.
In closing, the busiest part of 2008 was the last 6 months, since I became CEO.
