Community Figure Seeks Green Party Nod
(Barrie) Rose Romita has announced that she will be seeking Barrie’s Green Party nomination for the provincial election this fall.
Known affectionately in the community as “Rosie”, Romita has spent the last 2 decades in Barrie raising twins, running local businesses, and feeding the hungry at her famous Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving turkey dinners. “I’m driven by a strong sense of community and self-reliance”, said Romita, “and I believe by representing the Greens I can carry those values into government”.
“Through my entrepreneurial efforts, I’ve come to learn about the hurdles and barriers facing small business,” Romita stated. “That’s why I’m really impressed by the ideas the Green Party of Ontario offers to support small and local businesses in prosperous communities,” she continued.
Romita’s own business experience includes operating several stores and restaurants in Barrie, most recently Rosie’s Diner, which closed in 2009. Since then she has kept her hand in the kitchen with Catering by Rose, but also stepped up her efforts to help the homeless. Her Rose Foundation, which she launched last year, seeks to bring together funders and stakeholders to create much-needed transitional housing.
Erich Jacoby-Hawkins, Barrie’s federal Green Party candidate, works with Romita on the Simcoe County Alliance to End Homelessness. “I’ve been very impressed with Rosie’s initiative, and I believe that her strong connections to the community can only help the Green Party gain support in Barrie,” he said.
Peter Tretter, the President of the local Green Party riding association added, “We’re all very excited that Rosie is seeking the nomination. I believe she would be an excellent representative for the party in the fall election.”
The Green Party of Ontario will be nominating their Barrie candidate at Monsoon Lounge, 140 Dunlop St. E., from 2 – 4 pm on Sunday, February 6.
