Dear Green Party supporters,
First, let me say a heartfelt Thank You, Thank You, Thank You to all the people who supported my campaign, contributing their time or money, had a sign to show their support to the world, or voted Green in Barrie yesterday.
Although the Green Party was largely shut out of the national media in this election causing our vote to fall across the country, you maintained Green strength in Barrie and once again returned a level of support about 50% higher than the average in Canada and Ontario.Barrie is still one of the strongest Green-voting ridings in the nation. We can all take pride in being part of that.
We are unhappy with the overall result of the election – a false majority government whose rule is based on the support of less than 1/4 of the electorate. We must work to change this unacceptable situation. Over the next 4 years we will build an organization that can send a Green MP to Ottawa in 2015. That work starts now.
However, last night was also a triumph for the Green Party as our leader Elizabeth May has proven once and for all that Green votes CAN elect MPs in our first-past-the-post system. No longer will our support drain to other parties for fear that we cannot win – because we can, and we did!
We now put federal politics on the back burner and turn our thoughts toward this fall, the provincial election, and our new Barrie Green Party of Ontario candidate Andrew Miller. We’ve proven that Greens can win, and now we will prove that Andrew can win Barrie and represent us at Queen’s Park as our first Green MPP.
Again, thank you Barrie for all of your support. Together we will change the world for the better. We have already begun.
Barrie candidate, 41st general election (2011)
