I moved to Barrie in 2008. At that time, I had already been involved with the Green Party for over 3 years. I had emailed Erich, and told him I wanted to volunteer. He replied that he had a special job for me, and that I should attend the Executive meeting. Little did I realize that said job was that of CEO, and that 6 years later, I’d still be in that role.
At that first meeting, there were five of us, and I wasn’t even an official Executive yet. I accepted my role, and made it my mission to get us both known, out there, and with a larger Executive team. Thankfully just over a month and a half later, the 2008 federal election was called, we got 11%, that qualified us for an election spending rebate, and was our best vote yet!
From there I drafted the top volunteers for a special job – joining the Executive Board. They would help craft, and guide us as we moved forward to the next federal election. Out of that are a few truths. The first, is that Erich has been involved with the Barrie Green Party for 10 years. And that I am the second longest currently serving member on the Executive.
Over the years there has been a lot of turnover, but not so much as in the last year. Turnover is good as it helps to prevent burnout, but in the last year we’ve had trouble finding qualified, quality people to fill those shoes. And so our numbers have dropped.
Now there are 6 of us, compared to 20 on the Board of Directors of the local Conservative electoral district association. The less of us there are, the less we can do as Erich and I can only do so much. This affects our ability to present events such as the upcoming Earth Hour Super Drive, or showing the movie Bully which we did last June, along with bringing leaders such as Elizabeth May and Mike Schreiner to Barrie.
We need your help.
Members of the Executive are elected to the Executive at-large, with the exact positions determined at the first meeting of the Executive after the AGM. This is to help facilitate discussion abo)ut the various positions, and to clarify roles. Those positions are:
- President & Chief Executive Officer
- Executive Vice President
- Financial Agent – Federal
- Financial Agent – Provincial
- Vice President – Federal
- Vice President – Provincial
The Executive team generally meets ten times per year, which works out to once per month taking the months of July and December off. All members of the Executive team are unpaid volunteers, although expenses are reimbursed in a timely manner. We meet the second week of the month on a Sunday afternoon or Thursday evening.
So what are your obligations as a member of the Executive team?
- Attend monthly meetings
- Attend the yearly team-building activity
- Assist where & when possible in riding association activities and events
- Regularly check executive e-mail
It’s not all seriousness. Several times a year we’ll plan to have dinner before a meeting, or an unofficial get-together.
So how can you run? Email me by April 3rd, 2014. That will secure your name on the ballot.
To run you must be a member of the Green Party of Canada or the Green Party of Ontario, and be at least 14 years of age. You can sign up to be a member at the meeting, but you need to be a member of at least one of the two parties 15 days in advance to be able to vote.
Good luck and thank you for your consideration!
