The Georgian College Young Greens in conjunction with the Barrie Green Party are having our first event on May 10th at 7:00 P.M. Everyone is welcomed to attend.

Marianne Arbour, Executive Director of the Big Brothers Big Sisters, will be coming to the college to speak about their non profit organization.

It will be held in Building K, Room 225 at Georgian College. We hope to see you there!

An Exciting Opportunity for you to make a difference!

The Barrie Green Party is seeking community minded individuals from across Barrie to join a our exciting Executive team.

The Barrie Green Party consists of two organizations run jointly under one banner: the electoral district associations for the Green Party of Canada, and the Green Party of Ontario.

We ask that you be able to attend the monthly Executive meetings (usually held in the evening on the third or fourth Sunday of the month) and keep in touch with other executives to complete various tasks between meetings.

If there is an area you’re eager to be involved in, let us know! We’ll certainly try to accommodate any requests.

Specific positions we are looking to fill are:

Communications Chair

Volunteer Chair

Organizing/Election Readiness Chair

Fundraising Chair

Earth Hour and the Super Drive

The Barrie Green Party would like to take the opportunity to invite you to their third annual event of the Earth Hour Super Drive. It is dedicated to conserving energy, recycling electronic waste, and collecting donations consisting of non-perishable food items and gently-used clothing.

Where: Downtown Barrie, 110 Dunlop Street off of Toronto St. behind Transcom
When: Saturday, March 31
Main drive for clothing, food, and electronic waste will start at 1:30 P.M. and run until 4:30 P.M.
What: *Non-perishable food donations
*Gently-used clothing donations
*E-Waste, such as plugs, batteries, cell phones, video game consoles, T.V.s, computers, toys that run on batteries or use plugs
Why: This drive is to fulfill people’s lives for a more sustainable future and inspire compassion to others

All clothing and food donations will go to Nifty Thrifty, Elizabeth Fry Grocery Assistance Program, and David Busby Street Centre; if you cannot make it, but would like to participate, please contact the Green Party via email and pick-up from your driveway will be arranged. Please contact the Green Party in advance to RSVP, or to arrange a pick-up from your driveway.

From 8 pm – 9:30 pm join us for our first Earth Hour candlelight reception with Green Party of Ontario Leader Mike Schreiner. Tickets are $40/person.

Fraudulent calls harm democracy

Dear Friends,

If you’ve been paying attention to the media lately, you’ll be aware of the robocall scandal. The governing Conservatives may have made robotic or live calls to as many as 34 ridings in Canada, putting Stephen Harper’s majority into question. The ridings called include Barrie and Elizabeth May’s own riding of Saanich–Gulf Islands.

Elizabeth’s book Losing Confidence dealt with this and other voter suppression in a (sadly) prescient way.

Now we have the challenge of facing those consequences, both as Green Party supporters in Barrie, and nation-wide. In contrast to sneaky dirty tricks, our election campaign included a live telephone town hall where Barrie voters could directly speak with our candidate, Erich Jacoby-Hawkins. But even legal, open communication like this costs money, so we need your support to help us get out a principled message in the next election to counter the other parties’ vote suppression tactics.

So we’re offering you a special deal. If you donate at least $50 to the Barrie Green Party, we’ll send you an autographed copy of Elizabeth’s book Losing Confidence.

A few good people, a few hours a month!

We’re looking for a few good people. Perhaps you. To either join the Executive or volunteer and join our Green Century.

1. To join the Executive, one must be a member of the Green Party of Canada and/or the Green Party of Ontario. We meet either the third or fourth Sunday of every month around 7 pm. We typically don’t meet in July or December. Meetings are typically 2 – 3 hours. Additional hours helping out depend on what is going on that month. If interested in this opportunity, email us.

2. To volunteer for our Green Century you do not have to be a member. We ask that you come out once a month for three or four hours to help out at an event, knock on doors, and so forth. You’re welcome to volunteer more often if you wish. If interested in this opportunity, email us.

Members of the Barrie Green Party of Ontario Constituency Association, and the Barrie Federal Green Party Association are formally invited to Shift Happens Barrie 2012, the Annual General Meeting of both associations.

When: Sunday, January 15th, 2012
Time: 1:00 pm

Keynote speaker: Sara Peddle
Sarah Peddle is the Executive Director of the David Busby Street Centre. She will be speaking about the centre, and issues of homelessness.

We will be reviewing the last year’s accomplishments, electing a new executive team, and discussing the plans for the next year as we prepare for future federal and provincial elections.

All members are encouraged to attend and to consider filling one of the executive team positions.

Anyone is welcome to observe the meeting, but you need to be a paid-up member of either the Green Party of Ontario and/or the Green Party of Canada, and be a resident of the Electoral District to vote. If you’re a lapsed member, you’re welcome to renew that day to reacquire voting privileges. If you have never been a member but you’re interested in helping to build the organization, you’re someone we want on board!
